About Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy which translates from Greek into water-healing has been used since ancient times albeit for humans. It’s first use for animals was to treat and prevent leg injuries in racehorses and because of the wealth behind horse racing, in the mid-1900s inventors started producing devices which replicated the benefits of cold sea water. This then stemmed onto the greyhound racing industry which saw the benefits of the treatment on dogs. From there the therapy extended to all breeds which is where we are today.

Hydrotherapy is the use of water for pain relief and treatment. Hydrotherapy greatly improves the healing process. The warm water increases blood flow to the muscles which promotes tissue repair and muscle tone. Unlike walking, in swimming the breathing muscles have to work much harder which strengthens and improves the complete respiratory system. Water based exercise uses 30% more oxygen than land based which contributes to better blood flow and increased muscle bulk.

One of the main focuses of Hydrotherapy is to aid the recovery process post pre-op and after an injury or surgery. Hydrotherapy is beneficial to all dogs as it provides the following benefits:

  • Exercise in a weightless environment helps improve muscle tone and promotes tissue repair without putting any pressure on the joints.
  • Hydrotherapy is considered to be a great natural anti-inflammatory because of its ability to reduce any tissue swelling.
  • Due to the increased resistance in movements created by the water, the muscles must work harder than they would do on land. Water based exercise uses 30% more oxygen than similar land based exercise. This strengthens
  • Increased range of motion as buoyancy can help to encourage tight or stiff joints into improving their range of movement, increasing flexion and extension in the water.
  • Hydrotherapy greatly improves the healing process after an operation as the warm water increases blood flow to the muscles which promotes tissues repair and muscle tone.
